Located off the west coast of Carriacou, Grenada, the Sandy Island/Oyster Bed Marine Protected Area (SIOBMPA) is a vibrant sanctuary of marine and coastal ecosystems. Covering 787 hectares (7.87 km²), this marine park protects critical habitats, supports community livelihoods, and offers a breathtaking destination for eco-tourism.
Whether you're a visitor, a conservationist, or a local resident, SIOBMPA plays a vital role in safeguarding marine biodiversity while supporting sustainable livelihoods.
What Makes SIOBMPA Special?
A Haven for Marine Life
SIOBMPA is home to an incredible array of marine ecosystems and species, including:
✅ Coral Reefs – One of the most significant reef formations in the region, providing habitat for countless marine species.
✅ Mangroves & Seagrass Beds – Essential for coastal protection, fish breeding, and carbon storage.
✅ Hawksbill & Green Sea Turtles – Regular visitors to the area, especially for nesting on its sandy beaches.
✅ Mangrove Oysters – A valuable natural resource and a key indicator of water quality.
✅ The Grenadian Bank Tree Boa (Corallus grenadensis) – A rare and unique species found only in this region.

A Vision Rooted in Community
The concept of SIOBMPA dates back to 1988, when the Government of Grenada first considered the area for protected status. After years of community consultation, research, and planning—supported by international organizations, government agencies, and academics—SIOBMPA was officially established on July 31, 2010.
Today, SIOBMPA operates under a co-management model, with oversight by a board composed of representatives from NGOs, community-based organizations, government agencies, and private associations. This collaborative approach ensures sustainable use and conservation of the area’s natural resources.
Goals of SIOBMPA
- 🌎 Conserve Marine Ecosystems: Protecting habitats like coral reefs, mangroves, and seagrass beds.
- 🌟 Community Engagement: Actively involving stakeholders in park management.
- 🏅 Reputation Building: Establishing SIOBMPA as a leader in marine conservation.
- 💰 Socio-Economic Benefits: Supporting livelihoods through eco-tourism and sustainable fisheries.
- 📢 Awareness: Educating locals and visitors about the importance of conservation.
The Boundaries of SIOBMPA
SIOBMPA stretches from the Tyrrel Bay mangroves northward to the airport road in Lauriston, encompassing:
- 🌴 Point Cistern
- 🌴 L’Esterre Bay
- 🌴 Lauriston Point mangroves
- 🌴 Offshore islands, including Sandy Island, Mabouya Island, and the Sister Rocks

Sustainable Development & Local Livelihoods
SIOBMPA is not just about conservation—it’s also about sustainable use of resources.
The adjacent communities of Brunswick, Lauriston, L’Esterre, and Harveyvale depend on SIOBMPA for livelihoods, primarily through fishing and tourism. The protected area offers opportunities for sustainable economic activities, like snorkeling, diving, boat tours, and water taxi services offer opportunities for locals to benefit from the protected area.
To enhance sustainable livelihoods, there is a strong push for:
🔹 Ecotourism Training – Teaching locals about tour guiding, safe food handling, and hosting guests on platforms like Airbnb.
🔹 Sustainable Fishing – Encouraging offshore fishing for tuna and marlin (catch and release) and diversification of fishing techniques.
🔹 Sea Moss Farming – A promising alternative source of income.
Challenges Facing the Marine Park
While SIOBMPA is a conservation success story in the making, it still faces threats such as:
🚨 Overfishing – Unsustainable fishing practices harm fish populations and disrupt the food chain.
🚨 Invasive Species – These can outcompete native marine life and damage ecosystems.
🚨 Pollution – Runoff from land-based sources affects water quality and marine habitats.
🚨 Boat Activity & Tourism Impact – Careless boating, snorkeling, and diving can damage fragile coral reefs and disturb wildlife.
🚨 Climate Change – Rising temperatures and storm surges threaten the long-term health of the park.
How You Can Support SIOBMPA
Visiting the marine park? Here are a few ways to enjoy responsibly and help protect this fragile ecosystem:
🌱 Follow Sustainable Tourism Practices – Snorkel and dive without touching coral reefs, and use reef-safe sunscreen.
🎣 Support Local Fisherfolk & Vendors – Buy sustainably caught seafood and locally made crafts.
🚤 Be Mindful When Boating – Use designated anchoring areas to prevent damage to seagrass beds and reefs.
🌊 Reduce Waste & Pollution – Avoid single-use plastics and dispose of trash properly.
