Carriacou Carnival, affectionately known as Kayak Mas, is one of the most authentic, vibrant and culturally rich carnivals in the Caribbean.
For 2026, Kayak Mas runs from Thursday 6 February to Tuesday 17 February 2026, with the main Carnival events taking place between 11 and 17 February.

About Carriacou Carnival "Kayak Mas"
Kayak Mas blends music, masquerade, performance and community celebration into a Carnival that feels refreshingly uncommercial and deeply rooted in local tradition.
Carriacou Carnival comprises street dances, soca events, band parades, all night partying, dawn celebrations during J'ouvert morning and intense masquerade traditions such as Jab Jab and Shakespeare Mas.
Unlike larger Carnivals, Kayak Mas retains a strong community feel, with visitors and locals celebrating together across Hillsborough and surrounding villages.

Shakespeare Mas, A Carriacou Original
Shakespeare Mas is the cultural heart of Kayak Mas and is recognized internationally for its historical and artistic significance.
Masqueraders paint their bodies, wear elaborate headpieces and recite improvised Shakespearean verses, political commentary and social satire as they move through the streets. The performance blends theatre, protest and Carnival in a way found nowhere else in the Caribbean.
Shakespeare Mas takes place on the final day of Carnival, making it an unmissable highlight of Kayak Mas 2026.
J'ouvert and Jab Jab
For 2026, J'ouvert takes place on Monday 16 February, beginning in the very early hours of the morning, long before sunrise.
J'ouvert is one of the most raw, energetic and unforgettable parts of Carriacou Carnival. As the island sleeps, revelers gather in the streets, gradually building momentum through drums, whistles and music trucks. By first light, the streets of Hillsborough are alive with people covered in paint, oil, mud or powder, moving together in a chaotic but joyful procession.

Closely intertwined with J'ouvert is Jab Jab, one of Kayak Mas’s most distinctive and visually arresting masquerade traditions. Jab Jab masqueraders traditionally cover their bodies in black paint or oil and wear horned headpieces, chains and minimal costume. The appearance is intentionally confrontational, drawing on symbolism linked to resistance, satire, social commentary and Carnival’s long history as a space for inversion and protest.
Jab Jab performers move through the crowds in a deliberately provocative manner, dancing, posturing and interacting with onlookers. While the visual impact can be intimidating at first, the performance is theatrical rather than aggressive and deeply embedded in Carnival tradition. For many locals, Jab Jab represents one of the purest expressions of Kayak Mas culture.
Together, J'ouvert and Jab Jab create an atmosphere that is loud, messy, exhilarating and deeply symbolic. This is not a polished spectacle designed for spectators alone, but a participatory Carnival experience where boundaries between performers and audience largely disappear.

Visitors should expect very close contact, heavy crowds and a high energy environment. Old clothing is essential, as paint and oil are almost guaranteed. Those who prefer to observe rather than participate can do so from the edges of the street, but even then, it is difficult to remain entirely untouched by the experience.
For many who attend Kayak Mas, J'ouvert morning and Jab Jab are not just highlights of the Carnival, but moments that define Carriacou Carnival as something uniquely intense, communal and unapologetically authentic.
This short video will help you understand the origins of Jab Jab (though its about the tradition on Carriacou's larger, sister island Grenada).
Parade and Band Mas
The Band Parade, which takes place on Tuesday 17 February 2026, is one of the most colourful and accessible events for spectators.
Costume bands parade through Hillsborough with music trucks, dancers and performers, creating a festive atmosphere that blends traditional Carnival elements with modern soca energy.
The Parade is family friendly, highly photogenic and an excellent opportunity to experience Kayak Mas without the intensity of J'ouvert or Jab Jab.

Shakespeare Mas, A Carriacou Original
Shakespeare Mas takes place on the final day of Carnival, Tuesday 17 February 2026, and is widely regarded as the cultural heart of Kayak Mas.
Masqueraders paint their bodies, wear elaborate headpieces and recite improvised Shakespearean verses, political commentary and social satire as they move through the streets.
The tradition blends theatre, protest and Carnival performance in a way found nowhere else in the Caribbean. Shakespeare Mas has been recognised internationally for its historical and artistic significance and remains one of Carriacou’s most powerful cultural expressions.
