Carriacou Museum


If you want to learn about the ancient indigenous cultures of Carriacou Island, the Carriacou Museum is the place for you to visit. You can access the museum for a modest admission fee. It is located on Paterson Street in Hillsborough.

The Museum was founded in 1976 and before settling in Paterson Street, it resided in 3 different places in Hillsborough. It was in 1989 when it finally settled to its present home that was a former cotton ginnery. It was the second oldest cotton ginnery in the world which stopped operating only in 1979. That is why the building of the museum itself is also subject of historical interest .

Ms. Clemencia Alexander - the Museum curator will give you a guided tour of the Museum where you will find an extensive collection of Amerindian and African artifacts. Documents, furniture, glassware, and pottery from the colonial era are also displayed.

Most of the artifacts were found on archaeological digs on the island. You will have the opportunity to closely examine and even handle some of the pieces, but photography is prohibited. The staff members will be very helpful and informative for you when viewing the relics.

They also have an exhibit tracing the early British and French occupation of the islands, old maps of Carriacou, and the island’s first telephone!

School classes from Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique visit the museum from time to time and so they decided to also host field trips. Special guests have also visited the museum, including a delegate from UNESCO and the Governor General of Grenada.

The museum also has a gift shop where you can purchase historical prints, local arts and crafts, T-shirts, books about the island’s culture, and music CDs of Carriacou festivals.

Become closer to the past, present, and future life of Carriacou by visiting the Carriacou Museum where their African, Amerindian and European heritage is preserved for future generations.

They are open Monday to Friday at 10 AM - 4 PM and 11 AM - 3 PM during Saturdays.
